The European Commission has today recommended the proposed use of electricity power supply lines for the provision of low-cost high-speed internet access.
Reports have revealed there are in excess of 200 million power lines running directly into houses, schools and businesses in the EU.
The commission regards this figure as representing huge potential and will now look into opening up the market to new suppliers via the electricity grid as soon as is viable.
"Innovative technologies shall be given the opportunity to demonstrate their viability and contribute to growth in Europe," explained vice president Verheugen, commissioner for Enterprise and Industry.
"The prerequisite is a clear and balanced regulatory environment for attracting new players and new investment to the power line broadband communications market.
"This Commission recommendation will provide this clarity. Member States and innovative broadband service suppliers now face the challenge of making the most of this opportunity."
Energy suppliers in the UK are believed to be in support of the plans for market liberalisation.
