Watchdog energywatch is advising people in the UK to check to ensure their energy bills are correct.
The warning follows a series of cases that underline the failure of some utility companies to send out accurate bills.
In one example, Paul Monyard, manager of the Compass Inn Hotel & Restaurant in Gloucestershire, received an electricity bill from Centrica asking for £47,000.
In another case, Janice Brogden, owner of the Derby Arms pub in Ormskirk, Lancashire did not receive an accurate electricity bill for nearly five years.
Energywatch said 60 per cent of complaints come from businesses who are concerned they are not receiving adequate service from their gas or electricity company.
Karl Brookes, a spokesperson for energywatch, said: "We received more than 6,800 complaints last year from businesses about inaccurate, unclear and sometimes non-existent gas and electricity bills."
Consumers are advised to keep track of their meter readings and contact their energy provider if they believe there is a problem.
