A number of mills could be converted into renewable energy generators, which would provide electricity to local homes.
One project in the south west, the Mendip Mills Energy Makeover, has hlighlighted ten mills that could be used to generate electricity and provide thermal energy for local residences.
Liberal Democrat MP David Heath believes the large number of mills in the south west have an important role to play in reducing UK emissions.
Mr Heath said: "It is about rediscovering something that we have always had. We all agree we want more sustainable forms of energy and one of the unexplored areas is very localised generation, or micro-generation."
