BEAMAEnergy has given its backing to EU draft legislation that is proposing the introduction of 'smart' metering.
The new meters will allow customers to track and price their energy consumption with far greater accuracy, thus giving them a greater chance of working up cheaper energy bills.
BEAMAEnergy is part of the British manufacturing body that represents members who have interests in the metering, energy, and electric heating and ventilation industries.
Howard Porter, director of BEAMAEnergy, said: "Significant energy savings could be realised by the introduction of smart metering into the UK utility industry.
"Smart metering could form a significant part of the UK's strategy for combating climate change and achieving the government's carbon reduction targets."
Recent research by Professor Marcus Newborough at Heriot Watt University has predicted that the new meters could help reduce gas and electricity bills by between five and 15 per cent.
