Gas deal could lead to cheaper bills

9 June 2005

Northern Ireland Energy Holdings (NIEH) has announced that it is considering acquiring the Belfast transmission gas pipeline (BTP).

The Belfast Telegraph has reported that the pipeline, which runs from Ballylumford to Torytown near Carrickfergus and then under the seabed of Belfast Lough to Knocknagoney, could be worth nearly £105 million.

NIEH believes the deal could lead to lower gas bills for a number of Northern Ireland customers. It is estimated that savings of £5 million could be made in the first year and a further £30 million thereafter.
