Rising energy prices take their toll on Scottish manufacturing

20 June 2005

Rising energy costs are damaging the Scottish manufacturing sector, according to a number of firms in the region.

Companies such as Prestwick Circuits have seen costs rise from £470,000 to £950,000 over the past two years and could be forced cut jobs to help manage with the increasing prices, reports the Herald.

Derek Mansfield, managing director at Prestwick Circuits, said: "We are determined to do everything possible with respect to job cuts so it doesn't happen here.

"In the last year I have reduced usage by 17 per cent, taken out items that consume too much electricity and replaced them with new pieces of kit - and it is not cheap to do that."

There are fears that rising energy prices could be passed on to consumers, so MPs in the Scottish Executive are being lobbied to investigate what can be done to stem the price rises.
