Renewables specialist Alkane Energy has connected two new methane plants to the national grid network, providing more electricity for the UK's energy customers.
The two electricity generation plants located use methane captured from abandoned coal mines to jointly generate around 5.4MW.
The Nottingham Evening Post reports that the conversion of Bevercotes cost around £1 million but is capable of supplying power to in the region of 4,000 households.
Steve Goalby, finance director of Alkane, confirmed that the company is planning to extend the scheme to a number of other mining pits
Chief Executive Dr Cameron Davies, said: "Climate Change Levy exemption benefits coupled with high electricity prices in the UK have significantly improved the economics of our coal mine methane operations.
"The new UK projects complement our operations in continental Europe where we generate renewable electricity, manufacture climate change mitigation systems and supply high value added services in the methane-to-electricity market."
