Gas and electricity savings in pipeline

15 August 2005

Consumers could soon be able to cash in on savings on their gas and electricity bills and help the environment at the same time.

The improvements come courtesy of a new high-tech boiler due to be launched in the UK in the next few months.

Centrica, which trades under the British Gas, Scottish Gas and Nwy Prydain names, is to introduce the UK's first fuel-cell-powered mini boiler for domestic use.

The fuel-cell boilers will be powered by gas, using less energy and allowing customers to save money on gas at the same time.

Additionally, the boilers are expected to release 30 and 50 per cent less carbon dioxide than a standard boiler.

Centrica will team-up with Ceres Power to deliver the technology.

The chairman of Ceres Power, Philip Holbeche, told the Independent: "It will save consumers money. It will also save the country a considerable amount of energy."
