Technology heralds cheap gas and electricity

6 September 2005

Gas and electricity consumers could be a step nearer to lower energy prices after Ceres Power, the maker of a new fuel cell technology, agreed to expand its operations.

Ceres agreed a deal with industrial gas supplier BOC to manufacture fuel cells that would be mass-produced and profitable.

The fuel cell, which uses gas to produce hot water and electricity, should lead to significant savings for consumers through greater efficiency.

At present, BOC and Ceres are working on a fuel cell for business, which uses propane and liquid petroleum gas, but the technology could one day be produced for domestic use.

Ceres chief executive Peter Bance said: "This important follow-up contract underscores how Ceres is progressing rapidly towards a commercial product with its world-beating fuel cell."
