Customers of British Gas should think about switching supplier to save money, a newspaper has said.
A report from the Mail on Sunday says that British Gas's campaign to lock customers into a fixed-rate tariff is likely to cost more because fuel costs will fall again soon.
Many consumers have been considering the fixed rate Price Protection 2010 scheme since British Gas pushed up gas and electricity prices by 14.2 per cent recently.
Consumer groups and regulator Ofgem are urging caution, and with good reason.
The newspaper cites Jean Laughlin, 76, from Yeovil, Somerset, who switched to npower and cut her annual bill by 19 per cent, saving £128.
Allan Asher, chief executive of consumer group Energywatch says: "There is no shortage of available gas, but a number of producers have a stranglehold over the European supply of gas to the UK, which is keeping wholesale prices artificially high.
"The European Commission is looking into this and if it breaks this up, prices could tumble."
