UK gas and electricity consumers could save £6 billion a year by implementing energy-saving strategies in their homes, a new report has said.
According to This is Money, every family could save £250 per year by lagging the loft, insulating wall cavities and using the following energy-saving tips.
Switch off televisions, computers, washing machines, dishwashers, videos and stereos that are on standby.
Buy energy-saving light bulbs that last up to 12 times longer. The bulbs start at £3.50, and each one can save you up to £7 per year.
Use a new hi-tech smart meter, which will tell you at a glance how much you are spending.
Philip Sellwood, chief executive of the Energy Saving Trust, told the online news provider: "Energy-saving measures can help offset energy suppliers' price hikes as well as protecting the environment. Even the simplest measures can produce significant savings."
Another cheap and potentially easier way to cut bills is by switching gas and electricity supplier.
This is Money says that you can save an average of £270 a year just by switching utility suppliers, and some families will save £375.
