Water companies improving efficiency

20 December 2005

Firms supplying water in England and Wales are making clear efforts to improve efficiency, according to a new report from regulatory board Ofwat today.

The survey, which compared 22 water and sewage companies, awarded Bournemouth & West Hampshire, Cambridge, Portsmouth and South Staffordshire firms the top band for water service efficiency.

Thames and Yorkshire achieved top bands for sewage efficiency, while as a whole the industry outperformed Ofwat's expectancies for cost and efficiency in the 2000 to 2005 period.

Philip Fletcher, director general of Water Services, said: "The strong incentives we put in place when we set price limits encourage all companies, including the top performing, to squeeze efficiency further and produce even better value for money year on year."

He added: "The benefits of further efficiency savings will be passed on to customers in future."

The Ofwat report used a number of smaller water firms to set the benchmark for assessing organisational efficiency.
