Energy company npower has announced the investment of up to £1 million in marine technology.
The money has been raised through the company's juice fund, named after npower's green energy tariff, juice.
According to npower, up to 20% of the energy supplied to British homes in the future could come from marine technologies, providing they have the right amount of investment.
"Whilst marine renewables are at a very early stage, it's important that research and development funding is available to help the next generation of clean power," said npower's Lee Clarke.
"The juice fund will help get marine projects off the ground, even those at the concept stage."
Mr Clarke was speaking at the Ideal Home Show in London, where the Pulse Stream 100, an initiative that has received backing from the juice fund, was on display.
"As supplies of fossil fuels continue to diminish people are beginning to ask themselves how their homes and those of their children and grandchildren will be powered in the future," said TV scientist Johnny Ball.
"The npower juice fund is really exciting as it enables those with good ideas to perhaps come up with alternative solutions, such as the Pulse Stream 100."
npower has said that for every year that a customer is signed to juice, £10 is donated by the company to the juice fund.
