Energy saving learnt at school

Educating people about saving on their energy bill has been taken to the extreme by a school in London.

Waldegrave School for Girls in Twickenham has had a mini wind turbine installed on top of its boiler.

The new installation, which received support from Scottish and Southern Electricity, will provide electricity for the school's gym and dance studio.

"There are ways everyone can play their part in saving energy, and the use of small wind turbines is one way that we as a school can contribute," said head teacher Heather Flint.

The local council's deputy leader and cabinet member for schools, Geoffrey Samuel, said: "By installing the turbine they will not only be reducing their own energy bills but also showing others what can be done in terms of energy-saving."

"This project is much more than just reducing energy bills: it is an important educational tool," added Malcolm Eady, Liberal Democrat spokesperson for education.

"A first hand knowledge of methods of production of renewable energy will be of great help. Hopefully, the Waldegrave pupils will learn that it is very important that we all must consider energy saving schemes, and I suspect schools could be a good place to start."
