Energy smart meters could save four million tonnes of carbon emissions if they were rolled out across the UK, a watchdog has said.
Energywatch made the claim in a statement in support of a smart meter trial currently being undertaken by EDF Energy in collaboration with National Energy Action and the government.
Smart meters give consumers a real-time reading of their energy usage and bill.
The watchdog described energy metering as the "missing link" in motivating consumers to save energy, cutting their energy bill in the process.
"Smarter metering will bring a sea change for consumers," said Adam Scorer, director of campaigns for energywatch.
"Smarter metering must be integral to the UK's energy policy. In energywatch's response to the government's energy review, we call for the urgent installation of smarter metering to encourage sustainable consumption.
He added: "Consumers can be a major part of the solution to curbing carbon emissions but not unless they have the means to act."
