Government pushes for sustainable energy use

2 May 2006

The UK energy secretary Margaret Beckett has promised that the government will take the lead in helping consumers adapt to more sustainable forms of energy use.

She welcomed a report from a sustainable energy summit, in which representatives from businesses also became involved in a drive to use sustainable energy forms.

"The government is taking a lead both through its own choices of consumption and also in enabling consumers and business to reduce their environmental impacts," she said.

Mrs Beckett added that the government was already helping the drive for energy efficiency in a number of ways, including implementing new standards of energy efficiency for windows and boilers. As a result of this, energy efficient boilers now represent over 80% of the market - a fourfold increase from the 2003 level.

"This is an issue for us all; business, industry, individuals and government all share a responsibility to use our power as consumers to reduce our impact on the planet," she argued.
