Consumers should brace themselves for further price rises from energy companies this coming winter, according to price comparison website uSwitch.com.
Summer energy bills are also set to be at their highest ever levels. Since last summer, UK households have seen bills increase by an average 35% on gas and 26% on electricity.
"The news just keeps getting even more depressing for energy customers, as two suppliers in as many weeks hint at inevitable price hikes," said Ann Robinson, director of consumer policy at uSwitch.com.
British Gas and Scottish Power have both hinted that energy prices will have to rise again at some point this year.
"It seems that the bias for energy companies continue to be too heavily towards the shareholder with little thought given to the customer. Announcing profits and likelihood of future prices rises at the same time just doesn't sit well, it implies a lack of planning for the future and the issue surrounding wholesale gas prices continues to be a convenient excuse."
She added: "As energy price rises seem set to continue it is more important than ever for consumers to regularly asses their energy provider and tariffs to ensure they are on the best deal."
