Football fans are being urged to copy the example set by Fifa at the World Cup and think about energy efficiency.
The World Cup's impact on the environment will be cut by the use of energy efficiency, the use of renewable energy and environmentally friendly transport.
A consumer group involved with energywatch, the energy industry watchdog, is now urging consumers to take similar steps to reduce energy wastage, using a footballing theme.
Football fans are asked to remember the chant "off, off, off, off" when it comes to electrical appliances. The message "don't sweat if it goes to penalties" is designed to encourage fans to turn their boiler down by just one degree, which can save them around £40 a year.
Adam Scorer, director of campaigns for the consumer group, said: "With this being the first ever climate neutral world cup, it's an ideal time to kick off your contribution against climate change by tackling your own energy consumption. Taking on some simple green goals could save some households a staggering £300 over the year.
"With rising energy prices and all eyes on events in Germany, this is a great chance to get fans 'on the ball' in the fight against climate change."
