E.ON, the company that owns Powergen, has announced that it has begun drilling at the site of a new gas storage facility that will help improve energy security in the UK.
The company is constructing the new facility in Cheshire. It will be capable of storing around half of the country's average daily gas demand.
Dr Tony Cocker, managing director of E.ON UK's energy wholesale business, said the storage site would help meet the UK's increased need for new gas storage in the face of declining production from North Sea reserves.
"As our country moves towards a lower carbon economy, and we become a net importer of gas at the same time, it's clear that gas storage is going to become increasingly important to the UK," he said.
"Facilities such as this will help ensure we have enough gas available for the homes and businesses of our customers as well as the power stations that help keep the country's lights on."
Total capacity at the completed facility will be around 165 million cubic metres of gas.
