Power company reduces carbon emissions

22 June 2006

A UK power provider has said it will reduce the carbon intensity of its electricity generation.

E.ON, which runs Powergen, said that carbon intensity would be reduced by 10% by 2012, compared with the 2005 figure.

The company will have to make major changes to the way it generates energy in order to meet the reduction target.

Dr Paul Golby, Chief Executive of E.ON in the UK, said: "We view climate change as a very real threat and so we'll be taking a number of practical steps to reduce the carbon intensity of our business, so reducing our impact on the environment.

"We've already reduced our carbon intensity by more than 20% since 1990 and I believe that this commitment is both necessary and achievable but I also believe that it won't be easy."

He said that while the company was acting to reduce energy wastage, customers also had to do the same in their homes.

"Not only do we as a company have to reduce our emissions, we also have to engage with our customers to help them become more energy efficient and so reduce the amount of power and gas they use," he added.
