26 June 2006
ScottishPower's decision to raise prices for the second time in 2006 has been described as "unjustifiable" by a price comparison service.
The comments from uSwitch.com come after ScottishPower's decision to increase gas prices by 17% and electricity costs by 10%.
Customers will pay an average of £125 more as a result, despite the fact the power company only recently revealed a profit increase of 39%.
Profits were up by 129% in their energy retail and wholesale division.
"The results couldn't be better for the shareholders of ScottishPower, yet the only losers in this are the customers who will have to swallow another unjustifiable price rise," said Tim Wolfenden, product strategy manager at uSwitch.com.
"Consumers might have been forgiven for thinking that they had seen the last of gas and electricity price rises for 2006 after the record increases that were announced barely three months ago, which saw energy bills rise by an average of 31% in the past year alone. Unfortunately this announcement from ScottishPower has put paid to that notion."
