Work begins on £100m environmental technology project

30 June 2006

A multi-million pound construction project aimed at reducing sulphur dioxide emissions from a coal fuelled power station is now underway.

The work on RWE npower's coal-fired facility in Aberthaw will cost £100 million and is due for completion in 2008.

The construction works for the Flue Gas Desulphurisation (FGD) process will mean that the power station will meet new European emissions legislation due to come into force in 2008.

Sulphur dioxide emissions will be slached by as much as 95% on completion of the project.

Clive Smith Power station manager said: "This event marks an important phase in the FGD project which has safeguarded the life of power station for the foreseeable future.

"Coal-fired power still has a role to play as part of the UK's energy mix and it's important that the latest environmental technology is used."

The company was also behind the UK's first major offshore wind farm at North Hoyle off the coast near Rhyl.
