uSwitch comments on npower price rise

8 September 2006

The price comparison and switching website uSwitch has commented on npower's decision to increase its energy prices for the majority of its 6.3 million customers.

It is the company's third price increase since January 1st 2006 and as of October 1st npower customers will see their gas bills increase by 17.2% or £92, while electricity bills will increase by 9.9% or £36.

uSwitch states this will bring the average npower energy bill up to £1,008 a year from its current level of £880.

The research also discovered that as well as the average UK energy bill increasing by 35% in this year alone, around ten million consumers who have never switched are wasting £3.2 billion.

Ann Robinson, director of consumer policy at uSwitch, said: "Today's price increase by npower comes as no huge surprise, yet the disappointing inevitability of it will fail to cushion the blow for the majority of its 6.3 million customers, particularly those already teetering dangerously close to the fuel poverty threshold."
