Loughborough University is involved in a scheme which will see it generate all of its own electricity.
The environmentally friendly initiative is an extension of the university's efforts over the last five years to purchase 100% of its power from renewable sources.
A £1.3 million scheme will get underway to build a combined heat and power (CHP) plant on campus and is scheduled for completion by March 2007. CHP plants make improved use of primary fuel by reducing transmission losses which take place when electricity is in transit from the power station to the customer.
It is believed the new scheme will prevent around 1,200 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions being released into the atmosphere.
Greg Watts, Loughborough University energy manager, said: "This demonstrates our commitment to improving the University's environmental performance by adding a second combined heat and power plant to the campus.
"We are currently working with the Carbon Trust on a Carbon Management Programme and this new equipment provides an excellent start to the savings in carbon emissions that we are seeking."
