Phil Bentley has been named as the new managing director of the British Gas residential and business divisions.
Centrica announced the changes today as part of two changes to its executive directorship.
Mr Bentley, who is currently group finance director and managing director for Europe, will take on leadership of the group's UK energy downstream businesses.
He will succeed Mark Clare in the role, whose departure was announced in June 2006, and will assume his new duties after the release of the company's preliminary results for 2006 in February 2007.
Sam Laidlaw, Centrica chief executive, said the role was an important one as it involved the requirement to reduce cost structure at British Gas.
The other change announced by the group was for Jake Ulrich, Centrica managing director, to take on responsibility for business development in continental Europe.
Roger Carr, Centrica chairman, said: "These changes will reflect the group's current business priorities and will ensure that there is a right focus on the immediate challenges faced in the rapidly changing energy market."
