UK electricity producers prepare for winter

21 September 2006

UK electricity producers are preparing for all eventualities this winter with power stations across the UK stocking fuel in the event of harsh conditions.

The Association of Electricity Producers is preparing all electricity generators for winter so that power stations are able to increase their output.

Coal-fired power stations are also increasing their coal reserves and gas-fired stations with the technical capability to switch fuel are buying in distillate to guard against gas shortages.

Many companies are also arranging flu injections for staff and setting up shift cover while demand response programmes have been agreed with large industrial customers and emergency gas procedures have been put in place.

David Porter, chief executive of the Association of Electricity Producers, said: "The professional and thorough preparation of electricity companies for the winter shows they are taking security of supply very seriously indeed.

"Our members produce the electricity that the country depends on and beyond that they have a very real economic interest in doing their best to make sure the lights stay on.

"Gas supplies from abroad are looking more certain with new infrastructure going live during the autumn, but companies are ready to switch fuels if necessary."
