Wood can be an environmentally friendly, sustainable source of energy for the future, according to the Forestry Commission.
Dr Mark Broadmeadow, Forestry Commission spokesman, has been advocating wood fuel boilers as an energy source which can help mitigate climate change.
He told the BBC Radio 4 Today programme that these boilers -- an exhibition of which has been set up in Warwickshire -- are "removed from open fires with large logs sitting on them".
Dr Broadmeadow said: "The fuel source is generally either pellets or chip, and they are a very very efficient, clean form of energy.
"The important thing to realise is that wood is a renewable energy. You may cut down the trees and you do get carbon dioxide emissions when you burn the wood, but that carbon dioxide is re-fixed from the atmosphere when the trees re-grow.
"It is a sustainable industry and we are looking at that in thinking about an increased utilisation of wood. There may be a need for woodland creation, or purpose-grown bio-energy crops to ensure that any demand that we create is supplied in the longer term."
