CORGI: Gas checks on energy appliances important

26 September 2006

CORGI, the gas safety specialist, is warning customers of the need to carry out safety checks on all gas appliances before the onset of winter.

The company recommends checking all gas appliances at least once a year as carbon monoxide can leak from faulty appliances and cause death.

Helen Atkinson, CORGI commercial managing director, told Channel 4 News that such leakages were a "silent killer".

She said: "You can't see it, taste it or smell it. There are symptoms that you can look out for such as staining round an appliance or sooting.

"The most important thing to do is to get your gas appliances safety-checked annually by a CORGI registered installer.

"Any gas appliance could emit carbon monoxide poisoning if it isn't maintained correctly or ventilation is blocked or it hasn't been serviced for a long time."
