European Union (EU) energy sources will have to utilise carbon-free sources in the future, according to the EU energy commissioner.
Andris Piebalgs stated it was renewable carbon free energy sources that would have to form the backbone of Europe's energy policy in the future.
He said that the EU's current energy balance was untenable and that there needed to be a "genuine energy policy" put in place.
According to the EU energy commissioner, the focus of a review will directly impact the research that is undertaken when a long-term renewables energy road map is made.
Mr Piebalgs said other priorities included a priority interconnection and infrastructure plan, a vision on sustainable coal use and a workable policy on nuclear energy.
He also said it was in the EU's interest to increase the proportion of local, low carbon energy in the overall "energy mix".
