Malcolm Wicks, the government's energy minister, has said that supply and demand in the UK gas market this winter could be quite tight.
Mr Wicks told the trade and industry select committee that there were problems with insufficient storage in the UK.
One of the reasons for the tightening of energy this winter is the decline in supply from the North Sea continental shelf, which will make the balance difficult to manage.
He said: "Although I detect rather more confidence in the air, we as a government need to keep a very tight grip on things.
"There will be no subsidies, direct or indirect. We are not in the business of subsidising nuclear energy.
"No cheques will be written, there will be no sweetheart deals."
