The price comparison and switching website uSwitch has urged customers to shop around for the best energy deals for their heating this winter. It warns that although the wholesale price of gas has dropped, it may be the third quarter of 2007 before customers can reap the benefits.
The Met Office has predicted that the weather will be warmer over all, but Britons should expect an increased frequency of cold snaps. uSwitch has advised consumers to look at the service they are being provided with and to assess whether it is value for money.
Ann Robinson, director of consumer policy at uSwitch.com commented: "All providers pump the same gas through the same pipes. What customers are paying for is the service that they receive from their supplier."
"Making the decision to switch is one that I would urge consumers to consider sooner rather than later - on average people who have never switched can save about £325 a year and at the same time benefit from substantially better service," she added.
Ms Robinson also urged customers not to wait for Ofgem to regulate the suppliers more strictly on prices, saying: "[Ofgem] will need to gather information and evidence before they act and this will take time – we expect energy companies to use this period to put shareholders before consumers and hold off on reductions until absolutely necessary."
