The public are more aware and more interested in global warming and climate change than ever before according to a new public opinion survey published by UK energy providers EDF Energy.
The research was carried out by YouGov between October 26th and 30th; coinciding with the week the Stern Report illustrated the economic impact of climate change. 2,977 adults were quizzed online and asked questions about energy, the prospect of climate change and the impact of global warming.
The main points of public concern included where the UK gets its energy from, with 88% saying the UK should aim to be self sufficient in energy. Wind turbines were the most popular alternative energy source, followed by 'clean' coal plants.
Interestingly, 67% identified energy as a major UK challenge compared to 37% a year earlier and 51% agreed that climate change is an urgent problem requiring immediate 'radical' action
EDF Energy's chief executive, Vincent de Rivaz, commented: "The public is increasingly convinced that swift and decisive action is required to address climate change, keep the lights on and keep prices affordable.
"I hope that the findings of this survey will further reinforce the drive towards a sustainable energy policy, focusing on greater energy efficiency and low carbon energy generation," he added.
