UK cannot go it alone in battle against climate change

Online analysis firm Datamonitor, claim that the UK cannot combat climate energy on its own and that any attempt to do so could result in price rises and loss of home-grown industry.

Matthew Cowie, analyst of energy and utilities, stated that the UK is one of only a handful of countries inside the EU that have a 'short' national allocation plan for carbon emissions, in that the emission certificates that have been issued do not cover all of the emissions that were predicted to occur under 'business as usual' conditions.

Currently, only Italy and Spain have similar carbon cutting plans to the UK, with major players like Germany and France refusing to match Blair's bid. Ultimately, this means that UK businesses and consumers will face higher costs for carbon compliance than their European counterparts.

Speaking on the subject of Greenpeace protestors scaling the Didcot power station cooling towers last week, Mr Cowie commented: "By branding coal power stations as "Blair's legacy" to Britain, protesters overlook the commitment the UK has made to carbon reductions relative to other European nations.

"Climate change must be dealt with by a concerted international effort if any real progress towards stabilising atmospheric carbon levels is to be achieved. This UK government has clearly taken its targets more seriously than many other countries, even within the EU," he added.
