Brits make 94m energy mistakes each month

9 March 2007

A new report has revealed that British consumers make around 94 million energy saving mistakes each month by forgetting to perform small, eco-friendly changes like turning electrical items off and taking phone chargers out of the socket.

Surveying 1,848 people, Home Heat Helpline discovered that 30% of consumers are guilty of leaving the heating on overnight, while 28% admitted to boiling a full kettle for one cup of tea or coffee.

Over a quarter of those questioned said they regularly put the washing on before the drum was full and 20% also had their thermostat at 22C or above; one degree higher than the energy-saving guidelines.

Shamefully, a massive 63% of British consumers are still leaving their TVs, stereos and cable or Sky boxes on standby.

It wasn't all bad though, as 65% of Britons had made some attempt to make their homes more energy efficient in the past year - though just 32% of 18-24-year-old homeowners said that the care for the environment was their reason for doing so with the rest citing other reasons like the financial savings.
