Bye Bye Stand-By will cut costs and carbon footprints

13 March 2007

A new gadget promises to save consumers money on their energy bills as well as reducing their carbon footprint by turning off whole groups of unused appliances with the click of a button.

The Bye Bye Stand-By remote control works by attaching a plug to the socket where other electrical items are plugged in and then using the remote, using one button to cut the power supply to all the electrical components.

While this was not suitable for PCs, which should be shut down manually before being switched off, it would prove to be useful for all other electrical items, including TVs, DVD recorders and stereos, which would otherwise be left on stand-by.

Created by digital home specialists Domia, the product has already been tested in small home offices and can allegedly save consumers up to £38 per year on their energy bills.

Speaking to ITWeek.co.uk, Darryl Mattocks, Managing Director of Domia, said that the product would go on sale for around £29.99 and that they were already working on a more sophisticated version which would be compatible with more complicated machines, like home computers.
