npower 'does least for vulnerable customers'

1 October 2007

Energy supplier npower has finished bottom in a report looking at what companies are doing to help their most vulnerable customers, it has emerged.

The energy firm was named as the worst offender for helping households in fuel poverty, with only 1,200 consumers currently registered on its reduced 'social tariff', the Guardian reports.

The study, carried out by the Fuel Poverty Advisory Group (FPAG), also rates Scottish Power as a poor performer.

British Gas and EDF were found to be the best performing of the UK's six biggest energy firms, with 300,000 and 60,000 customers respectively currently listed on their 'social tariffs'.

Speaking to the Guardian, a spokesperson for npower described the FPAG's findings as "purely subjective".

According to estimates from industry regulator Ofgem, there are currently four million households living in fuel poverty in the UK.

Fuel poverty households are those that spend more than 10% of income on heating and lighting bills.
