Tories encourage green energy switch

5 October 2007

Households should get incentives for switching to renewable energy, the Conservatives stated at this week's party conference.

Speaking to delegates in Blackpool, Shadow Environment Secretary Peter Ainsworth announced proposals adopted from the party's recent Quality of Life policy review.

Mr Ainsworth explained plans to give households incentives to switch to renewable energy via a feed-in tariff, which would allow people to sell any excess energy back to the electricity grid.

Tories also called for a levy to be introduced on power station waste heat, to reduce carbon emissions and energy wastage.

Mr Ainsworth said that the Conservative government would begin "a revolution in the way that our energy is generated and supplied".

He added that the introduction of the power station waste heat levy would "encourage the capture and use of heat which today is just thrown up into the sky".

Government figures show that households are currently responsible for a quarter of the UK's overall carbon emissions.
