Ofgem releases new green energy report

2 November 2007

Energy industry watchdog Ofgem released its annual Sustainable Development Report yesterday.

The report, covering the 2006/07 period, highlights what the organisation has done to promote green energy use over the year.

Progress of the Ofgem-run investigation into the feasibility of the government's smart meter scheme is also covered by the report.

It is hoped that the special meters - which tell householders how much energy their domestic devices are using to encourage them to cut back on waste - will form a central plank of future government environmental policy.

The report also sets out measures taken by the watchdog to encourage UK energy providers to cut carbon emissions.

Ofgem Chairman Sir John Mogg, commented: "In regulating the networks we have opened the way for the massive investment needed to connect the low carbon generation Britain needs to meet its climate change targets.

"All this work shows how sustainability plays a pivotal role in how Ofgem exercises our statutory powers to protect the interests of present and future customers - it demonstrates that Ofgem is capable of making a significant contribution to the government’s objectives on sustainability with our current remit and within the framework of competitive energy markets and independent regulation."
