London Array gets go-ahead

8 November 2007

The building one of the world's largest windfarms in the Thames estuary came a step closer to completion yesterday, as the government gave its approval to the project's onshore substation.

Energy firm E.ON is behind the plans for the 1,000MW, 341 turbine London Array project - which it claims will produce enough electricity to power one-quarter of London homes when completed.

London Array will also contribute up to 10% of the government's legally-binding green energy commitment to cut back carbon emissions by one fifth before 2020.

The Climate Change Bill, announced in the Queen's speech earlier this week, also commits authorities to cut 60% of the UK's total carbon output by 2050 - making the need to increase renewable energy production still more pressing.

Project Director of London Array Andrew Murfin commented: "Now that these important consents are in place, we are focused on the tendering necessary for the first phase of this project, the results of which will determine whether the project economics and schedule are acceptable.

"This is great news and is another significant step towards the development of this flagship project for the UK."

Energy Minister Malcolm Wicks also officially approved the construction of a new 450MW windfarm off the coast of Cumbria yesterday.

ABC Money reports that the Walney project, to be operated by Danish firm DONG Energy, is to be opened in 2013 and will help power 360,000 North West homes.
