SSE introduces new solar power service

15 November 2007

Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE) has launched a new tariff, aimed at the expanding 'green energy' market.

The new service, aimed at both households and small businesses, would see solar panels installed in homes and offices of participants.

Price cuts would be offered for customers if they save enough energy to transfer back the electricity surplus from the solar generators to the network.

Ian Marchant, Chief Executive of SSE, said: "This is another important step forward in the development of our interests in solar power. We are now offering solar power generators a simple pricing structure which represents real value for all concerned.

"I hope that it helps encourage further investment in solar power, which can play a growing and significant part in meeting the UK’s energy needs."

The government has already pledged to cut 20% of overall carbon emissions by 2020 - and an increase in use of renewable energy sources will form part of its strategy in fulfilling obligations.

SSE has recently celebrated a "hat trick" of excellent customer service results in surveys.

It topped a poll from uSwitch, with 75% of customers expressing satisfaction with the firm - and repeated its top-placed result in surveys from JD Power and energywatch.
