Brown 'to double' renewable energy commitment

19 November 2007

Gordon Brown might commit to a doubling of the UK's proposed renewable energy commitment, reports have suggested.

According to the BBC, the Prime Minister will set out his bold new environmental targets in a speech today - his first on the subject.

"It is understood [Mr Brown] has been persuaded by the Department of the Environment's arguments that Britain must meet European obligations on wind, wave and solar power," the report adds.

Currently, the UK is committed to producing 20% of its energy from renewable sources by 2020, although internal civil service reports leaked to the Guardian newspaper this summer suggested that the target was not likely to be fulfilled on current trends.

Mr Brown's speech will come after the release of the most authoritative statement yet on the potential future progress of global warming.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) said last week that the evidence for climate change was "unequivocal" and that its effects could be "irreversible".

Launching the IPCC's assessment, United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon said that that tackling climate change was the "defining challenge of our age".
