Rising energy bills may be on the way for many consumers, as the second major UK gas and electricity provider in a week has announced a hike in bills.
nPower said yesterday that it would put up its gas prices by 17% and its electricity up by 13% for its 'tracker' energy plans in the New Year.
This follows a similar announcement from British Gas last week - which will hike rates by 13% for gas and 15% for electricity.
Commenting on the news, Head of Home Services at uSwitch Tim Wolfenden said: “Suppliers are paving the way for across the board price increases.
"Today’s move can leave consumers in no doubt that prices are heading North again - the return of the £1,000 average energy bill is imminent."
According to industry speculation, once the tracker rises are in place, bills for standard energy plans will also increase.
uSwitch predicts that there will be a 15% overall across-the-board increase in bills in months to come - equating to an average £137 extra being paid each year.
