Energy efficiency measure takes off

21 December 2007

A retired Nottingham man has been praised for his part in boosting energy efficiency in local homes.

Ron Turner is a long-term participant in charity Age Concern's EnergyRight scheme - designed to alert older people to the benefits of saving domestic energy.

Fitting better loft insulation and more efficient boilers - as well as putting in energy-saving lightbulbs - not only cuts domestic emissions, but can lead to significant reductions in energy bills.

Age Concern, along with volunteers like Ron Turner, is assisted in its scheme by energy firm E.ON - which subsidises insulation fitting in some of the households.

The 70-year-old energy campaigner commented: "I worked independently for many years for a company providing energy saving products and systems and have always been interested in ways of saving energy and reducing bills."

"Although EnergyRight only began operating in Nottinghamshire this year, we've already helped over 100 older people, some of whom have discovered thanks to the project that they are eligible for loft or cavity wall insulation free of charge."

The government set a target of reducing total carbon emissions by 60% in 2050 in its new Climate Change Bill earlier this year - toughening-up its previous commitment of making 20% of cuts by 2020.

Energy efficiency projects, along with the proposed roll out of smart meters into homes within the next decade, forms a crucial part of this policy.
