SSE captures second place in energy market

27 December 2007

Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE) has become the largest energy supplier in the UK after British Gas, a new report has found.

According to the Datamonitor Market Share Monitor, SSE has doubled in size over the past five years to beat E.ON UK into second place.

The firm has grown from 4.5 million customers to 8.4 million, buoyed by strong performances in customer service surveys.

It has topped the uSwitch customer satisfaction survey for four years in a row.

Commenting on SSE's success, Head of Home Services at uSwitch Tim Wolfenden said: "This must be the icing on SSE's Christmas cake and is justly deserved - SSE has worked hard on a winning formula for its business.

"It gives customers competitive energy deals coupled with industry beating customer service, which is a real vote winner with consumers and the bedrock for its growth."

In 2002, SSE was the second smallest of the UK's 'big six' energy firms - British Gas, E.ON UK, SSE, EDF Energy, npower and Powergen - in terms of customer numbers.
