Microgeneration 'more viable as energy prices rise'

4 March 2008

Fresh forms of energy may become more sustainable in a few years if the price of current energy continues to rise, one expert has claimed.

The official, Faithfull+Gould's Ian Butterss, argued that microgeneration methods - including rooftop wind turbines - could be viable if this is the case and if a carbon tax is introduced, reports Environmental Data Interactive.

At an Ecobuild event in London, Mr Butterss noted that because the cost of such new technology is decreasing all the time, repairs will be cheaper in the future.

"It is so important that we get to grips with it. Have a cost analysis without it, and we wouldn't do any of these things," he commented.

He added that it is likely energy prices will see a further hike in the years to come, as they have doubled over the last couple of years.

The US government has stated that gas prices hit high levels last week - with an average price of $3.16 (£1.58)- due to the cost of crude oil.
