Elderly reminded about fuel help

20 March 2008

Older people have been urged to get help with their energy bills by the Pensions Minister Mike O'Brien.

The politician warned the over-60s that the deadline to apply for winter fuel payment is March 28th, reports the BBC.

He stated that as a result of increasing gas and electricity bills it is imperative that the elderly act now to get an adequate level of assistance.

"Following recent increases in fuel costs, it is more important than ever that older people claim all the help they are entitled to," he remarked.

Most of the individuals entitled to receive the allowance would have done so at the end of last year but some could have gone unnoticed, possibly because they have not claimed in the past.

Winter fuel payments are given by the Pensions Service and Chancellor Alastair Darling recently said in his Budget that the stipend will rise to £50 for those over the age of 60 next winter.
