Energy prices 'rise fast under Brown'

25 March 2008

Consumers are seeing prices rise higher than the government's official inflation figures, Conservative party Leader David Cameron has said.

Mr Cameron claimed that the basic cost of goods, such as bread and eggs, has risen astronomically since Gordon Brown took over the Labour leadership, reports the BBC.

Furthermore, he claimed that the price of gas and electricity has risen by 10% in the time after Mr Brown became Prime Minister.

And families have been hit even harder, Mr Cameron suggested, by recent Budget changes made by the government.

He commented: "Labour now seem so out of touch with the lives of working people that they keep on making things worse, with an extra £110 of taxes a year in the Budget for the average family."

Labour also does not understand how to make life easier for consumers, he added, stating that the party is "kicking families while they're down".

Last week, Scottish and Southern Energy announced that it is to raise energy prices in the coming year by 15% for those on new tariffs.
