5 million switch energy supplier

2 April 2008

A high number of consumers opted to switch the company they get their energy from in 2007, a new study from Ofgem has revealed.

In total, over five million people decided that they wanted to change deals, in the face of price hikes from large suppliers of gas and electricity, the firm said.

Now an enquiry has started into the competitiveness of the market, Ofgem noted, which will consider if customers are getting value for money.

Chief Executive at the regulator Alistair Buchanan stated that if people are not happy then they will move on.

"The number of customers switching ... shows that suppliers who don't offer competitive prices and good service will lose customers," he commented.

Scottish and Southern Energy has now become the second most popular energy company in Britain, behind British Gas, the outfit observed.

A recent study from the Energy Saving Trust found that householders in Northern Ireland are doing their bit to add green energy technology to the area.
