Energy firm 'is tricking consumers'

7 April 2008

An energy firm in the UK has apparently been using underhand tactics in the bid to get new customers on board, a new investigation has found.

The Sunday Times claimed that npower sales staff in some cases told consumers that they were not signing contracts when in fact they were being tied down to deals.

Various measures are used by the company's salespeople, the paper alleged, such as taking advantage of those who cannot speak good English.

A journalist was placed undercover by the newspaper, with one salesman telling the writer: "Whatever I'm doing here you don't have to discuss with anyone else, because if you're going to be very honest we can't sell anything."

In response, Chairman of the commons' business and enterprise committee Peter Luff stated that he will be looking at the developments in more detail.

European companies are pushing up the price of gas because they are buying energy in the summer and keeping hold of this, Jake Ulrich from Centrica Energy recently observed.
