It is hoped that a fresh agreement between the government and six large energy companies could help to lower fuel prices for many people.
More support is set to be given to consumers that are considered vulnerable in terms of the money they have to spend on fuel via new tariffs and efficiency, reports the Independent.
By 2010-11, £150 million will be spent on such avenues, while this figure will stand at £100 million in 2008.
John Hutton, Energy Secretary, considered that the extra funds ought to be enough to offer assistance to those who suffer when paying bills.
"I believe this extra cash, coupled with ensuring we have the most competitive market possible, will help us towards our goal of eradicating fuel poverty in the UK," he commented.
He added that he understands the worries that consumers have when energy prices in the UK are raised.
Various groups have reacted angrily to Mr Hutton's announcement and said that the government has not done enough, such as Head of Consumer Policy at uSwitch.com Ann Robinson.
